School Officials Outline the Plan for Remote Learning
Consistent expectations, quality learning are its cornerstones

Fayetteville, NC – During a meeting of the Curriculum Committee of the Cumberland County Board of Education today, CCS staff outlined how students will be educated when they head back to school under Plan C (Remote Learning).

For the purpose of establishing consistent expectations and quality education from school-to-school, the Remote Learning Update answered numerous questions about the following areas:

  • Daily Learning Schedule: A daily learning schedule has been established for elementary, middle and high schools, which includes LIVE learning time with teachers, independent work time for students, student breaks to manage attention span, and time to visit the district’s meal sites for lunch.
  • Canvas Learning Management System: The online district-wide learning management system for student instruction will provide interactive learning, align assignments, house lecture recordings and quizzes/exams and provide online grading.
  • Grading: The district will use a uniform grading structure that aligns with Board policy and assures that student assignments, quizzes and assessments are balanced and provide quality feedback. Grades for students in grades 3 – 12 will be recorded in Canvas, which aligns to the PowerSchool Grading System that can be readily accessed by parents and students.
  • Professional Development: School-level and system-wide professional development, which is scheduled for August 10-13 and throughout the school year, will ensure that teachers and principals know how to effectively use Canvas while also providing equitable, consistent and quality instruction to all students.
  • Device and Instructional Materials Distribution: The distribution of devices and instructional materials will occur the week of August 10. About 80 school buses will be outfitted with internet connectivity to serve as hotspots and will be strategically placed in areas throughout the community to make certain students have access. A helpline will be established to assist families that encounter any technology challenges.
  • Services for Special Populations: Academically/Intellectually Gifted, English As A Second Language, Exceptional Children and Pre-Kindergarten services will be provided throughout the remote-learning experience.
  • Cumberland Academy (K-12 Virtual School): Cumberland Academy will operate as two separate schools, serving elementary and secondary levels, and will open on August 17 with students from approximately 2,500 families who have accepted a seat. Because of the large enrollment, the district has hired two principals — one for grades K-5 and another for grades 6-12.
  • School officials have also built into the remote learning plan ways parents can share concerns about their child’s remote experience with teachers, principals and the district.
