School Board Approves New Executive Director, Principals

Fayetteville, N.C. – Cumberland County Schools (CCS) Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr., announced the new executive director of elementary school support and four new principals during the special Cumberland County Board of Education meeting on July 30.

Jackie White was named the executive director of Elementary School Support. She has served as the principal of College Lakes Elementary since 2010. Previously, White worked as an assistant principal at R. Max Abbott Middle and a literacy coach at Teresa C. Berrien Elementary. She has held a variety of positions in educational institutions outside of the district. White holds an associate’s degree in early childhood education from State Fair Community College (Sedalia, MO), a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Central Missouri State University (Warrensburg, MO), and a Tier I administrative credential and master’s degree in elementary education from Chapman University (Santa Maria, CA).

Dr. Tremaine Canteen was named the principal of Cumberland Academy (Virtual School – Grades 6-12). Dr. Canteen currently serves as the principal of the Capitol Encore Academy, a K-8 public charter school in Fayetteville. Previously, she served as an assistant principal at Spring Lake Middle, a math teacher at Lewis Chapel Middle and a services coordinator at Alger B. Wilkins High. Dr. Canteen holds a bachelor’s degree in middle grades math education, with a minor in special education, a master’s degree in middle grades math education, a master’s degree in school administration and a doctorate in educational leadership – all from Fayetteville State University.

Nathan Currie was named the principal of Cumberland Academy (Virtual School – Grades K-5). Currie most recently served as the superintendent of North Carolina Cyber Academy, an independent, virtual public charter school that serves over 2,500 students in grades K-12. He began his career as an elementary and middle school teacher in Rowan-Salisbury Schools, later becoming an assistant principal, principal and director of middle schools. Currie went on to serve as the assistant superintendent of Administration in Rowan-Salisbury Schools and later the executive director of North Carolina Connections Academy, a virtual public charter school. Currie holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Livingstone College, a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Phoenix and is currently a High Point University doctoral student in the School of Education.

Brenda Ware-McAllister was named the principal of College Lakes Elementary. She currently serves as the principal of Lillian Black Elementary. Previously, Ware-McAllister worked as a teacher at E.E. Miller Elementary and C. Wayne Collier Elementary, assistant principal at Alma Easom Elementary and Warrenwood Elementary, and principal of C. Wayne Collier Elementary. Ware-McAllister holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Methodist University and master’s degrees in elementary education and school administration from Fayetteville State University.

Kamal Watkins was named the principal of Lillian Black Elementary, where he currently serves as the assistant principal. Previously, Watkins worked as a teacher assistant and teacher at College Lakes Elementary and a teacher at Howard Hall Elementary. Watkins holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature and an elementary education certification from Fayetteville State University, and a master’s degree in administration and supervision and an educational specialist degree in educational leadership from Liberty University.
